Constant Profile

Form tools constructed with “logarithmic relief grinding” are commonly referred to as “constant profile” tools. The logarithmic fall-off on the back of the cutting edge, in fact, guarantees the constancy of the rake and profile even after the tooth’s face has been reground.

Despite the fact that the initial value of a cutter of this kind is usually higher than one with a Straight Relief, economical advantage is ensured by the fact that the tool regains the same productive capacity as original after each regrinding.

When well-designed and correctly constructed, a cutter of this type is guaranteed to permit an elevated number of regrindings.

Combination with spiral toothing is possible.

LOGARITHMIC RELIEF

Regrinding on form cutters with LOGARITHMIC RELIEF

When regrinding the face of the tooth and maintaining the exact same cutting angle as original, the rake and the profile remain unchanged. The tool’s output does not change and the profile is not deformed. The operation can be repeated as long as the tooth maintains its mechanical strength.

The rake angle is always the same as the initial angle.

The profile remains unchanged.

STRAIGHT RELIEF

Regrinding on form cutters with Straight Relief

The regrinding of the tooth’s face that is normally performed on a form cutter with Straight Relief results in the progressive decrease of the rake and the deformation of the profile. The tool’s output decreases and the profile changes. After two or three regrindings both the groove and the profile must be restored, and this significantly increases the tool’s total cost. The rake decreases. The profile is deformed.
